  1. Pull the upper lid down over the lens 
  2. (ask the patient to continue to 
  3. look down and close their eyes).  
  4. HOLD  the upper lid closed because 
  5. if one releases the upper lid the 
  6. lens will probably just slide out 
  7. from under the upper lid.
  8.  
  9. While holding the upper lid in place, 
  10. with the index finger of the other 
  11. hand, pull the lower lid out from 
  12. under the lens.  If necessary have 
  13. the patient look up, keeping the 
  14. upper lid in place all the time.  Once the lower lid is on top of the lens, the lids can be released.  Check to be sure the lower lid is on top of the lens.
